What is Reading RULES!?

Reading RULES! is an intervention originally developed for first-grade students having difficulties learning to read. Using the program, teachers provide systematic instruction in word study (phonemic awareness, phonics, word reading, and spelling), text reading (accurate reading, comprehension, and fluency), and comprehension (listening comprehension and reading comprehension). What grade levels are included?

Reading RULES! for first grade and upper levels of the program, suitable for students in Grades 2-4 with reading difficulties and disabilities, have been developed, along with a comprehension, text reading, and self-regulation intervention called Idea Detectives. Reading RULES! for Kindergarten is currently in development.

Can the existing first grade program be used at other grade levels?

Yes. Teachers have used the first-grade level with students in Grades 2-3 who have very serious reading difficulties and disabilities. Teachers have also used the first-grade program with kindergarten students who do not have reading difficulties.

How much time does it take to teach Reading RULES!?

Reading RULES! for first grade includes a 15 to 20-minute whole-class lesson in vocabulary and comprehension plus a 30-minute small-group lesson for students with reading difficulties. We recommend that the program be taught 4 to 5 days per week.

Who can teach Reading RULES!?

Reading RULES! can be taught by a classroom teacher, a special education teacher, or a reading intervention teacher who receives training to prepare him or her to teach the program with fidelity.

Are there any studies of Reading RULES! going on now?

We will be conducting a pilot study of Reading RULES! for Kindergarten in the 2021-2022 school year. If your Houston or Dallas-area school is interested in participating in a study in the 2021-2022 school year, please contact us for more information. Please note that we do not work with individual families in our Reading RULES! studies. We implement the studies through schools.
